About Amla

Belonging to Narmadapuram division, Amla is a town in the Betul district of Madhya Pradesh. It is a Tehsil headquarter and located around 28 KM from Betul. Sarni, Multai, Betul, Shendurjana are some of the nearby cities to Amla. The town was used for military purposes by British and used to be called "Ammunition Land", thereby taking its name and later abbreviated to Amla.

Geography of Amla

Amla is located at 21.924335°N and 78.127856°E with an average elevation of 737 meters or 2421 feet. It has a rail junction and is well connected to Itarsi, Nagpur and Chhindwara. Pachama, the biggest waterfall, is located just 20 KM from the railway station. The city has a high literacy rate of close to 80% which is way higher than national average of 59.5%. With a population of 30215 per census 2011, city has around 51% males and 49% females. One can easily reach Amla by rail, road or air. The nearest airport is Sonegaon Airport. If you are travelling by road, getting a bus to Itarsi is advisable.

History and Culture of Amla

Under British rule, Amla was known as "Ammunition Land" and used for different military purposes. The Amla Railway Station was also used as a base kitchen for catering purposes before 1989, which was later shifted to Itarsi. The sub district is famous today for its Air Force Depot. Hindi is the local language spoken here. 

Tourism in Amla

Amla has a rich cultural heritage. Being in Amla is a way to experience some of the great tourist attractions nearby. Muktagiri Jain Temple is a scenic temple located around 80 KM from Betul and 135 KM from Amla. Balajipuram, another famous temple is located just 30 KM from the city. Every year on Basant Panchmi, a funfair is organized at the temple that attracts so many devotees and tourists here.  Kukrukhamla and Multai, the origin of Tapti River, are other places that are worth visiting. Often tourists love to indulge in shopping the local handicrafts, silverware and leather artifacts at the Haat Bazaar.
